Nonprofit Mergers Have Their Place, but Aren't the Best Solution for Tough Times
Some believe that the levelling-off of charitable contributions and the increased competion for funds signals a need for nonprofits to merge to achieve greater efficiency and use donors' funds more wisely.
Unfortunately, most mergers only result in a 4% savings in operational costs, while causing months or years of organizational disruption. Disruption has its own costs that may exceed the merger's projected savings.
There are many reasons why a merger makes sense, but operational savings is never a good reason to merge nonprofits.
The good news is that there are several alternatives to merger that allow a nonprofit to leverage its strengths and get more mission for the money. These options include informal networking, cooperation and alliances, coordination and partnerships, forming coalitions, and collaborations. These options offer varying levels of flexibility, impact, and independence and can be selected based on the desired purpose, structure, and process of the participating groups or agencies.
NEXT MONTH: Sometimes mergers are the right (or only) solution. Learn how and why Sumption & Wyland facilitated the successful merger of two health care nonprofits.
Strategic Planning from the Development Perspective -- AFP Sioux Falls October 2
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) -- Sioux Falls has invited us to present excerpts from our day-long "Strategic Planning from the Development Perspective" seminar.
We'll do a 30-minute highlights and introduction presentation during the lunch meeting at Sioux Vocational Services on Thursday, Oct. 2. Please contact us if you're interested in attending, or if your organization would like to receive this training opportunity.
Book Review -- Good Primer for Volunteer Fund Raisers
Training volunteers to ask for charitable gifts -- to raise funds -- can be a daunting task. This book makes it a lot easier by using simple guidelines written from the volunteer's perspective. It's a quick read filled with useful tips and positive reinforcement. It's also a quick read that many will refer to, pass along, and use as a teaching aid until the pages are dog-eared and the cover well-worn.
