Estate Tax Repeal -- How Will it Affect Charities?
The estate tax affects only 1-2% of all US estates, but those estates give a lot of money to charity. What will happen should the temporary, one-year repeal of the estate tax (in 2010) become permanent? Will the wealthy stop leaving their wealth to charity? Will their heirs give more because they’ll receive more in inheritance?

The NonProfit Times 12/15/2003 issue described an OMB Watch report that says that charities will lose $10 million a year should estate tax repeal become permanent. The report then described what would happen to charities and states, on average.

Unfortunately, the analysis techniques were seriously flawed and resulted in meaningless conclusions. The original studies on which the OMB Watch report was based contain significant assumptions and fail to take into account several relevant factors. For a peek behind the story and the truth behind the scare headlines, please read the article on our web site.

Viruses, Worms, and E-Mail
This issue of the e-newsletter was intentionally delayed because, a few weeks ago, various e-mail viruses and worms were about to be unleashed around the world. Frankly, we didn't want to get lost in the shuffle as all these virus-laden and worm-generated messages hit the Internet.

Fortunately, predictions of widespread Internet problems were exaggerated.

PLEASE, be sure that your computer is equipped with up-to-date anti-virus software, has an effective INternet firewall, and includes anti-spam e-mail filters to help you sort through all the junk and keep the important stuff you need. It's an old piece of advice, but worth re-emphasizing.

Web Site Resources Updated Regularly
Please remember that we update the Sumption & Wyland web site regularly, adding resources, links, and tips all the time. Book reviews, seminar handouts, columns and letters to the editor (like January's Wall Street Journal letter) are posted for your information -- and comment.

Take a brief tour and see what's available!
