A Strategic Plan -- and $1 Million -- for South Dakota Parent Connection
Margaret Sumption received more than one pleasant surprise when she arrived one evening last month to facilitate the strategic planning retreat for the South Dakota Parent Connection.
She was greeted with flowers and news that the $1 million, five-year Federal grant application she had prepared for the organization had been approved!
South Dakota Parent Connection, established in 1986, is South Dakota's only Federally-recognized Parent Training and Information Center (PTI), charged with providing technical assistance, education, and resources to parents of children with disabilities. The new grant will assure activities for 1,200 parents annually and more than 23,000 parents and professionals served during the five-year grant period.
Congratulations to Parent Connection on their new grant and their new strategic plan!

Sumption & Wyland
delivered its new,
five-day full immersion
grantsmanship course
for the State of
Arkansas in September.
Regional representatives
of the Arkansas Workforce
Investment Board
were assembled in
Little Rock to receive
the unique training,
which combines custom-tailored
grants training with
basics in organizational
and departmental
strategic planning.
We are grateful to the Arkansas Workforce Investment Board and especially to Jean Ann Reed, our contact person with the Board. She compiled the workshop evaluation results (complete with testimonial kudos) into a PowerPoint presentation you can view on our web site.
Brief Analysis
of the Nonprofit Sector
We were asked recently to prepare a brief analysis of the nonprofit sector as a component of the US economy. The analysis included statistics relating to the size of the sector and its impact, some characteristics of the nonprofit marketplace, and indications of future trends in the nonprofit sector.
A few facts:
* The nonprofit sector of the US economy encompasses more than 950,000 organizations, employs more than 8% of the US workforce and accounts for more than 7% of GDP
* Generally, funding streams break into thirds – Federal, state, and
local government grants and contracts; gifts from individuals, corporations,
and foundations; and revenue, usually in the form of fees for service.
* Gifts to charity in 2002 totaled $242 billion, and volunteer hours donated to charity were valued at almost $300 billion.
Book Review -- How to Write Knockout Proposals
We've posted a new book review on our web site this month. Joseph Barbato's "How to Write Knockout Proposals: What You Must Know (And Say) to Win Funding Every Time" is a very useful and easy-to-read book on how to write foundation grant applications.
Rather than focusing on the nuts and bolts of proposals, he focuses on the essential lessons a good grant application writer must know or learn to be successful. Using the advice in this book will help the reader think and act like an experienced proposal writer.
The chapters are short, concise, and well-written -- a good mantra for crafting successful foundation proposals.
